The staff of First Circle, the award-winning SHS Literary magazine which won the highest awards of both the National Council of Teachers of English AND the South Carolina Scholastic Press Association last year, is pleased to announce that we are now accepting submissions to this year’s edition of the magazine.
What do we need? Virtually all kinds of writing and artwork, including poetry, fiction, personal essays and other kinds of creative nonfiction, one-act plays, chapters from novels, engaging reviews of music and films, paintings, prints, sketches, photographs. The only restrictions are that whatever is submitted must be the original work of the author or artist–not, for example, just a retelling of a story from a movie or television series–and that it contain a strong voice.
This year’s First Circle theme is “You belong,” an epigram taken from the following lines of F. Scott Fitzgerald: “That is part of the beauty of literature. You discover that your longings are universal longings, that you’re not lonely or isolated from anyone. You belong.” Submissions do not have to reflect this theme in order to be accepted for the magazine, but they may, and of course many will just because we are all members of the human community.
Submissions should be emailed to Dr. Epps as WORD attachments or brought by room 213-D or given to any member of the SHS Literary Club.
Thanks as always for your support. The Deadline for submissions is February 28th.
