Dr. Coberly and Ms. Wise visited the Loquacious to speak with Freshman Academy social studies students about anime/manga and how it reflects Japanese culture. Dr. Coberly sponsors the anime club at USC Upstate, and Ms. Wise spent four years teaching in Taiwan. Classes played bingo (matching terms like Weak Female or Chinese food to pictures), looked at manga characters, learned about movies and characters and what they said about what people in a culture find important, and watched clips from Naruto. The talk was very engaging, and upper grade students even slipped into the back to ask questions and name the characters on the screen. Thank you Dr. Coberly and Ms. Wise for taking the time for discussing anime and manga with our students.
